83. It is always #TBT at the Inqusition. Inquisitor Coteaz Part 3.

Slow progress you say?
You expected more?

Well in honest, i have actually made leaps and bounds in terms of progress, just not on stuff that gets posted here.

Issue 6 of The Cardboard Cartographer went live with a review of Cards Against Humanity, amongst other news and Kickstarter stuff.

Also, if you read my last post, then you'll know that I've been working on the Mice and Mystics figures, which have been posted on The science of selling yourself short.
I've scheduled an update of my progress on that project for the 29th, so expect to see that around 6/8pm GMT :3

Other than my various hobby activities, it has been a rather hectic week so far, and with the UK Games Expo over the next three days, I don't see much progress happneing until next week.

So for now, here's what I've managed to get done on Coteaz.

The gun makes it almost impossible to get a decent focus shot.
As such all of the highlights that define the checks, mouth, and eyebrows look none existent haha.
IRL it is honestly more defined and significantly paler.
I'll have to try and get a picture of these next time, but doing just this crashed my phone a few times as the lenses struggled a lot haha.

But as you can see I've finished work on the ragged fur cloak he's rocking

This picture is a bit chalky, but is pretty spot on for the IRL colour of the cloak, the reds seem super bright though.

This next one is a little better

I spent a great deal of time fixing the shading issues on the red cloak and it makes for a nice stark contrast that isn't jarring or out of place.
It isn't my usual gentle blended red, but I'm digging it.
I think it suits the style and shape of the cape/ cloak better.

All of the pictures have sneak peaks of the force staff.

Super work in progress; tons to do here.
But basically, the cream bits are set to be bone/ marble depending how it looks.
The brown bits are to be gold/ copper, probably done with citadel paints as apposed to the Liquid Gold I used for the armour.
The handle is going to be a rich reddish leather.
The skull is a green>white deal, with a gentle glow on the black skull, with a gloss varnish to finish.

And that is it so far.
It doesn't look like a lot, but it was a good few hours of work over a few days.

It shouldn't be too much work to finish this guy off.... I haven't decided on how to base him yet.
Probably be some form of Urban basing to fit with the Gaming Board Project.

Anyway, that is all for now.
Leave me some feedback!
Either here, on the Bolter&Chainsword or @DarKHaZZl3 on Twitter and Instagram.

82. Nobody expects the Imperial Inquisition. Inquisitor Coteaz Part 2.

I'm quite happy to have found myself with the drive to keep painting.

So while I dig out other bits for other projects I'm going to endevour to paint everyday.
If only a little.

So, here is some Inquisitorial goodness.

It has been quite a while since I've posted an update about this, so if you want to have a look at what he looked like then head to that post from August 2014.

Anyway, back to today's progress.
I've done the vast majority of the red work and all of the cloth/ purity seal paper work.

med_gallery_33843_5271_99362.jpg

The cape needs the shadows done properly... they're a little patchy, and maybe a final highlight or two to make it pop a little more.
I'll crack on with that after I've finished the other larger areas which I've been working on today.

I'm only doing single models for a while so I don't overload myself on amount of models at the same time, also I'm also painting the models form the Mice and Mystics board game.
I'll be posting those on both my personal blog  and here too.

So keep checking back to see progress on that, and all my other projects.

Thanks for reading!
Feedback welcome as always, as well as any general chatter/ questions about anything I do/ have done.
I had some fantastic positive comments about my Quad Gun over on my thread on the Bolter & Chainsword.

See y'all soon.

69. (Giggity) Inquisitor Coteaz Part 2.

well the Inquisition calls, you best paint. Or else.

I finally got my new painting stuff!

Some Isopropyl, Alcohol based brush cleaner, synthetic miniature painting brushes and a few vial/pippet dropper combo's.

med_gallery_33843_5271_802678.jpg

So the Liquid Copper kind of looks like this

med_gallery_33843_5271_647556.jpg

Lets get started!
After watching a load of videos on this stuff I was ready to roll.

First you shake the paint very, very well.
Then you pour some into a pallet and close the bottle asap.
After that take some Isopropyl and use it to thin the paint.
And go!

med_gallery_33843_5271_151041.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5271_823455.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5271_174675.jpg

So far it is just the base Copper washed down with strong tone.
The Cape is a couple of layers of foundation red.

Ready for the never ending layers of red!

The Liquid Copper has great coverage...kind of made me very aware of how poor the casting of this miniature is...
Ah well.

I might paint some more of him this coming week. Been really tired this week though, so who knows.

Anyway, Peace out

65. Throwback Thursday - Inqusitor Coteaz Part 1.

#ThrowbackThursday

Yep. I'm revisiting an old project (pretty much the theme of my life right?).
And this, the first post is technically the third?
BUT
Throw Reboot on the title, and we're back to square 1!

Ramble = Done.

For those of you who don't follow my Work in Progress thread on The Bolter and Chainsword this all makes no sense right now.
So first off, you should go check that shit out you deek! (Link on the left < of the page).
Secondly, and possibly more importantly (as both you and I are lazy no doubt) I'll recap it all here for you.

Back on the 9th of September 2011 I decided to bring all of my various Work in Progress threads under one title.
To keep it simple and clean.

My first post (post introduction) was the start of my Inquisitor Coteaz for my current army in progress at the time; The Grey Knights.

I decided I hated the current models pose; The Cyber-Eagle really bugged me, and his hammer was not epic enough.

So I cut him up a bit.

Afterwards I wondered how I'd represent the Eagle and such (#WYSIWYG).

Eventually I came upon this concept; sod the Eagle!

So this is what I came up with...

med_gallery_33843_5271_182701.jpg

This depicts Coteaz later in his career; the trials of being a Malleus Inquisitor start to take its toll.
The constant battles with Daemons and the forces that besiege the Imperium have left him worn.
His signature artefacts lost or destroyed, he now relies on his impressive psychic abilities to forge onward. But it isn't enough.
He has to delegate power across the sector he occupies which eases the burden, allowing him to travel more freely.
Yet with the fall of the Cadian gate the forces of the warp grow ever more powerful.
Coteaz finds that, in order to keep up, the rigid puritan views he once held are starting to crack and crumble. He has to use methods that in his prime he denounced as heretical.
His force staff is imbued with psychic technology that far surpasses the levels of human intellect.
this potent weapoin amplifies his powers allowing him to strike with the same power he once did with his hammer, while at the same time attuning his senses to the reality that surrounds him (This for game purposes would serve to replace the thrice dammed Cyber-Eagle).

Foreshadowing done!

That is kind of as far as I got.
With the new Grey Knight codex out I  decided to start painting him.
I wanted to paint him in line with the 'ageing' idea in this potential future; aged, battered, needing rest and repair.

So I prepared him for painting...

med_gallery_33843_5271_245163.jpg

and I picked up some Vallejo Liquid metals for the job.

med_gallery_33843_5272_880108.jpg

Anyone used these?

Well I hadn't, and still haven't.

I did learn a few things though...
Liquid metal is alcohol based.... and has a bunch more metal chips in than your metallic acrylics.
What does this mean?

A ) You can't thin the paint with water. It doesn't react well with the alcohol, or the metal.
You end up with dry paint and a brush covered in stiff metal chips..
On that note
B ) It is really hard to clean in water because of this.
C ) Also if water makes constant contact with the paint in the pot it will rust. Seriously.

So you need alcoholic thinner and alcoholic cleaner.

This throws up another problem
You can't use sable brushes. The combination of alcohol and heavy metal will ruin them.

So I've now purchased the thinner, the cleaner and a set of high quality synthetic brushes...
Should have Googled that a bit better the first time round...

Anyway that is it for now.
I have another post going up almost immeditly after this, so check it out.

Peaceout

6. An Honorary Road to Glory

The title for this post is apt. As of right now 'The Underhive Hero' will be the hub for all of my, DarKHaZZl3's, hobby stuff.
This is the road to glory via the Underhive.
This is death and rebirth.
This is... going to be slow and probably underwhelming.

Hey! What can I say? At least I am being honest right?

So, the first half of this post will be project outlines and their status.

First off we have the reason 'The Underhive Hero' was created - The other, the specialist, the none power armoured.

  The Escher Gang.
Still a work in progress. I need to build 1 heavy stubber and 1 Juve. I did start painting some of the models, but got stuck on trying to vary ethnicity.

 The Terrain.
Many, many updates for this one.
I never finished my power plant... it still needs to be pollyfillered and based.  However, I have a far more exciting and useful project to which I am intending to dedicate the vast majority of my time until it is finished. I am making a Gaming board. I will elaborate more on this in a post designed specifically around it, but essentially it will be a 6 x 2 board made from 2 x 2, 9mm thick sheets of MDF, based in fine sand and painted in city like colours.
I'm looking forward to this quite a bit actually... the 2 x 2 squares allow me to chop and change out square to mix it up a little. Could be fun.

  The Armies.
Space Marines.
More work than is necessary to be quite honest. I have finally decided on a chapter. They will be the Salamanders. I want them to stand out a bit, so I'm breaking all of my models down, and starting from scratch. No model will be built from box. Conversions/slight changes must be everywhere. DEATH BY CONVERSION/EFFORT OVERLOAD. I can't see this project getting done soon... so don't expect a lot of activity here (but then again, when do you ever?).

The Sisters of Battle.
Still part painted. I halted the continuation of this project on the premise that I need to write an army list for my little metal ladies. I have a 400 point list (again, elaboration in own post), so we will see how it goes eh?
I did buy a penitent engine though... I want to die...

The Grey Knights.
Swallowed the inquisition. Too many possibilities. New army list needed. Army halted until then. As with the sister I've written a 400 point list. I need to make a Las/Plas razor back and then I'm good to go.

The Death Watch.
Still going at its snail's pace. I decided jump packs didn't suit them... so may Vanguard are in the process of receiving an upgrade involving the Grey Knights teleport packs... It just made sense at the time.

Other 40k.
On hiatus. Looking to switch my Imperial Guard for Death Corps of Krieg and Gathering things/generating ideas for the Ad Mech. A long way off.

Everything Else.

NAH! TOUGH! I bought 2 Grey Knight strike cruisers for Battle Fleet Gothic... Does that count?

So that is where I'm at. Not overly exciting really. I'm Well into making this game board though... I will post step by step updates for those who want to see how it goes. For those that don't, well.... do one! Quick now! Before I set Dengar Roth on yo' ass!

The second half of this post is boring. All the above needs funds. I am having a clear out of models.
List of models for sale:
