A hobby blog from DarKHaZZl3; the writer of 'The science of selling yourself short' and owner of 'The Cardboard Cartographer'.
Created from a need to canvas opinions, and keep track of all things hobby related. Anything Warhammer 40,000 to Fantasy to Necromunda.
Well, almost... the basses need finishing, and I need to add their numbers, but as they'll be the same colours for the Human team, I'll just do them all in 1 go. I'll hopefully post a picture when that happens. The group shot is a bit terrible. I need to seriously invest in upping my photography game (lights, lightbox, camera... everything) Managed to snap some better individual shots though. I wont call this project complete until I've added those last detail, but for now, it's on to the human team
As I stated the other day, I've started running 'A Tale of Many Hobbyists for my local gaming club.
A good chunk of the pledges I made were to work on some old Bloodbowl models I shared with you guys on here yeaarrrsss ago (in 2013 to be exact in the post '19-random-update-but-it-has-models-so.') Well, we have progress!
I've got the Green to where I want the base colour to start at.
I'm going for a super old school 80's/90's vibe, so bright saturated Green.
This took about 5/6 layers between Caliban Green and Warpstone Glow (mixing them in between) and a fairly heavy wash of Biel Tan.
Form here it's highlights and some darker shading on the Black Orks.
And of course, all the other colours...
But yes, progress has been made, which is the whole point of the 'A Tale of Many Hobbyists.'
In case I haven't mentioned this before, I run a Hobby Club called West Midlands Wizards based in, shockingly, the West Midlands.
I'm in charge of events for the club (either running them, or coordinating) and one of the events I've set up is 'A Tale of Many Hobbyists.'
In case you haven't heard of this kind of event, it is something Games Workshop used to do in White Dwarf (I think they still do occasionally), where several Hobbyists, get together, set a target, and work towards an end goal.
This used ot take the form of 'A Tale of Many Gamers,' with players growing their force each month, and taking part of a linked campaign.
While I'd love to run this, the pace is slightly relentless, and in addition, not everyone in the club games or collects large projects.
So I decided to run 'A Tale of Many Hobbyists.'
The year is split in to 4 separate parts, and at each intersection, participants set up a hobby goal to work towards.
At the end of the year, we'll all have made some awesome progress... and conveniently, completely (hopefully) a specific project in time for another event I've set up, 'Project of the Year (which is something we can talk about later).
I digress.
My hobby goal for the first 3 months is to get some of my long standing projects completed.
First and foremost I want to get Leman Russ finished (Ideally in time for the next trip I go on to Warhammer World)
In addition, my 2 classic Bloodbowl teams
The Orks:
The Humans:
On top of this, I want to finish my Lord Relictor:
These have all been started, but considering how long I paint, it is something a little ambitious for me!
How about you guys? Would you like to join in?
The first part, consisting of 3 months, runs from February 2nd and concludes May 3rd.
Hit me up on here, my Twitter or my Instagram with your pledges and progress if you do!
I'll try to post progress at least once each month
As an Armies of the Imperium fan, I obviously had to get the first Triuvirate.
Inquisition, Ad Mech and Sisters of Battle?
yesplzkthnx
I set about building the Sisters first (I did actually build Grefax first, but ya'know)
They're a bit fiddly, especially Celestine.
But I got there.
Here they are, with my marble style basses to go with them;
The eagle eyed of you will recognise that base from a previous post, which can be found here!
Yes, I canabalaised my old Celestine base for the new one.
Fear not though, the old one will be getting a new base...I'm not abandoning her just yet!
All that's left is various girts of sand and cork dust to make the rubble and they're ready to be primed,
I am stuck in two minds weather to keep them in their original colours,
or to use something different that will tie them into my current Sisters
of Battle more.
It'll be a good while before I paint them, so I've got time XD
So yes, I promised more updates of painted miniatures for the Sisters of Battle. So here is the completed priests (minus the bases) and a completed Jacobs (with bases). Enjoy picture spam (side note, my light is very yellow);
And here is the the shotgun wielding maniac himself!
I've been back and forth in my mind about how to to the basses. I originally wanted white marble, but with bone coloured Sister's it doesn't exactly stand out. So I then went with black, however using grey for marble effect is actually surprising tricky in comparison to green/ turquoise. So yeah, there you go! I paint models. It happens. -DH-
It is a bit of a cheat, considering I've done a fair bit, and am just rationing out updates XD
Ah well.
After basecoating all of my Battle Sisters I was pretty burnt out on
them, so I decided to do some other painting bits and pieces as a
'break.'
I moved on to something Sisters of Battle related at the very least.
So, you guys may or may not know, when I built my army initially it was designed to have Uriah Jacobs in my list. (here is a link to the whole built army back then - A road to glory that never seems to catch a break) So as my break from Sisters of Battle, I decided to paint up Jacobs with a squad of Imperial Priests.
As with Jacobs, my priests are a mix of Empire/ Free People Flagellants
from WFB/AoS, Necromunda redemptionists and Imperial guard bits.
A bit of a close up so you can see what they're like (also I really like how I painted the hair on this one)
The scheme may look like a generic red priest scheme, but is actually based on some real life stuff, most notably Jacobs.
Cookie to whoever can guess what it is from .
As always Constructive comments, criticism, feedback/ general related conversation welcome.
Being made redundant a while back really hit me hard emotionally and financially.
Lucky fr me the cover work I spoke of has carried me through just about,
but November, December and January where not comfortable for me.
I did a bit of hobbying here and there, but didn't really feel any joy
from it... in fairness I didn't feel a great deal of joy form anything.
Over January though my mood has improved, and I've focused on making as much progress I can, in the areas under my control
One of those areas is my hobby.
Sometime in November I set about the task of basecoating all of my Sisters of Battle.
This was a pretty long and arduous process, especially considering
a ) I'm a terribly slow painter
and
b ) I hate batch painting
Purples, Greens, Browns and Blacks (for the black parts and in anticipation of the metal parts)
I'm happy to report though that they are all done... or hey were, until I acquired some more XD
( I couldn't turn down the new canonness and plastic Celestine!)
That's a lot of girls!
Here is what they look like up close
It took me until late December to finish these basecoats, and then I
took a break from them and did some work on some other stuff (which I
have subsequently completed, so expect pictures soon)
I'm going to try and forge ahead.
I imagine I'll get distracted at some point though, so no promises.
So after painting some Stormcast Eternals for the shop, I kinda caught the Age of Sigmar bug a little. So I'm actually going to carry on with them for my own self. So I started with a box of Liberators. The thing that has always kind of bugged me with Age of Sigmar is the supposed lack of customisation. Once you open the box you can tell there are a lot of weapon options, but in terms of possibility there is very little you can do... Or so you'd think at first. With a little bit of twisting and turning, and a few bits of creative cutting (some wrists to move positions of hammers) you can get a decent amount of possibility. Having some green stuff helps.
I wanted to keep the 'everyone has shields' kinda theme, so I made a strap for the Liberator Prime's shield so it could be slung over his back. I also threw in some Blood Angel heads to give the Stormcast a bit more of a human touch. I based the idea off the limited edition Warhammer World Errant Questor.
So that's it... a few mold lines to remove and then on to painting... Though I am painting several other things right now, so that may take some time XD Anyway, until next time
-DH-
I told you there would be more updates! Though this is almost like a demo than a full fledged release. While at work (what little of it I have left), we somehow ended up talking about stars and painting them onto figures. I've never attempted it personally, but thought it would be cool to paint them on to a cape or something... Now, when I envisaged it in my head I didn't think of the little flicks of white on a bluish background that a lot of people do. I thought of a nebula. A giant cloud of gas with stars of various sizes and intensities dotted around it, and so, I thought I'd give it a go. This is the result. Not bad for a first time I think. There is a lot of things I would do differently; More colours, more stars underneath / in amongst the cloud with the 'gas' layer on top. Overall I'm pretty happy with it :) That's it for this one. More stuff soon though! -DH-
Haven't done a decent post in a good while, so here are some Stormcast Eternal Liberators I've painted for the cabinet at work. They've taken a good while to complete, but I'm pretty happy with them.
Hey Underhivers! I know I haven't been very consistent recently, but I have been working on other projects (as always). If you'd like to chock those out head to The science of selling yourself short for more info! Back to it. I hit a hobby wall in the shape of too many boardgames with miniatures that are un built and unpainted. So I've made it my mission to get these out of the way. The problem with this is that building miniatures as they come in the box bores the life out of me... So far I have built all of the Miniatures from Assasinorium Execution Force, and it nearly killed me. So going into my next task; The Silver Tower, I've decided to try and make things a little more interesting for myself, without converting any of the models. The game is fairly varied in all fairness. unlike Execution force, there isn't 15 of essentially the same figure... the most of one type is 8. But I still want to make them 'my own.' This starts from the ground... no up, just the ground. Most of the tile sin Silver Tower are this cracked turquoise stuff, with gold banding. The plan is pretty simple; copy it onto the basses. To do this I've used the Games Workshop palette pads to created the crazy shapes that are all over the board tiles. Obviously, these will be painted gold, and any 'raised' areas will be added in using shading and highlighting. As for the cracked floor, I decided to cheat...kinda. Agrellan earth; a self crackling paint from the citadel paint range. All I ave to do now is paint it! I'll be using Stegadon Scale Green, Sotek Green and Temple Guard Blue to do the job. Before that though I have a ton more basses to do... That's all for now! Keep you eyes peeled for more soon. -DH-
Really long title, but you know. Words, words, words.
Since finishing the Princess I thought I'd crack on with the rest fo the gang. After all, with how few models a Necromunda gang has I might actually finish this project!
Speaking of finish, here are a couple more of the gang done!
Shotgun ganger; I tried to base her colour palette on Zoe from firefly. I mean, she's a badass lady from the far future in a lot of leather and armed with a shotgun.
Next up we have a Juve;
ORANGE AND BLUE. ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED.
In all seriousness, I just wanted to do pastel orange on something. It suits the 80's/90's feel.
Very happy with the way the juve turned out. I wasn't sold on the face to start with, but now I think she looks like she has a bit of sass about her.
I'm working on more, but my pace has started to slow down again. Heavy painting times at work of late I guess.
Anyway, that's all for today. More soonish hopefully.
