119. A prayer filled road to glory. Sister of Battle part 22.

So yes,
I promised more updates of painted miniatures for the Sisters of Battle.
So here is the completed priests (minus the bases) and a completed Jacobs (with bases).

Enjoy picture spam (side note, my light is very yellow);

I've been back and forth in my mind about how to to the basses.
I originally wanted white marble, but with bone coloured Sister's it doesn't exactly stand out.
So I then went with black, however using grey for marble effect is actually surprising tricky in comparison to green/ turquoise.

So yeah, there you go!

I paint models.
It happens.

117. A Road to Glory. The Ecclesiarchy. Sisters of Battle part 21.

Another update!!
I know.

It is a bit of a cheat, considering I've done a fair bit, and am just rationing out updates XD

Ah well.
After basecoating all of my Battle Sisters I was pretty burnt out on them, so I decided to do some other painting bits and pieces as a 'break.'

I moved on to something Sisters of Battle related at the very least.

So, you guys may or may not know, when I built my army initially it was designed to have Uriah Jacobs in my list.
(here is a link to the whole built army back then - A road to glory that never seems to catch a break)

So as my break from Sisters of Battle, I decided to paint up Jacobs with a squad of Imperial Priests.

As with Jacobs, my priests are a mix of Empire/ Free People Flagellants from WFB/AoS, Necromunda redemptionists and Imperial guard bits.

med_gallery_33843_5957_5983.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5957_180193.jpg

A bit of a close up so you can see what they're like (also I really like how I painted the hair on this one)

med_gallery_33843_5957_40603.jpg

The scheme may look like a generic red priest scheme, but is actually based on some real life stuff, most notably Jacobs.
Cookie to whoever can guess what it is from ^_^.

As always Constructive comments, criticism, feedback/ general related conversation welcome.

115. A Road to Glory. Butter Biscuit Basecoat. Sister of Battle part 20.

I know, I know, it has been a while.

Being made redundant a while back really hit me hard emotionally and financially.
Lucky fr me the cover work I spoke of has carried me through just about, but November, December and January where not comfortable for me.

I did a bit of hobbying here and there, but didn't really feel any joy from it... in fairness I didn't feel a great deal of joy form anything.

Over January though my mood has improved, and I've focused on making as much progress I can, in the areas under my control

One of those areas is my hobby.

Sometime in November I set about the task of basecoating all of my Sisters of Battle.

This was a pretty long and arduous process, especially considering
a ) I'm a terribly slow painter
and
b ) I hate batch painting
Purples, Greens, Browns and Blacks (for the black parts and in anticipation of the metal parts)

I'm happy to report though that they are all done... or hey were, until I acquired some more XD
( I couldn't turn down the new canonness and plastic Celestine!)

med_gallery_33843_5957_154146.jpg

That's a lot of girls!

Here is what they look like up close

med_gallery_33843_5957_66460.jpg

It took me until late December to finish these basecoats, and then I took a break from them and did some work on some other stuff (which I have subsequently completed, so expect pictures soon)

I'm going to try and forge ahead.
I imagine I'll get distracted at some point though, so no promises.

Thanks for reading

101. When I shotgun you say escher; Shotgun! Escher! Shotgun! Escher! It Came From the Underhive. Escher Gang part 6.

Really long title, but you know.
Words, words, words.

Since finishing the Princess I thought I'd crack on with the rest fo the gang.
After all, with how few models a Necromunda gang has I might actually finish this project!

Speaking of finish, here are a couple more of the gang done!

Shotgun ganger;

I tried to base her colour palette on Zoe from firefly.
I mean, she's a badass lady from the far future in a lot of leather and armed with a shotgun.

Next up we have a Juve;

ORANGE AND BLUE. ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED.

In all seriousness, I just wanted to do pastel orange on something.
It suits the 80's/90's feel.

Very happy with the way the juve turned out.
I wasn't sold on the face to start with, but now I think she looks like she has a bit of sass about her.

I'm working on more, but my pace has started to slow down again.
Heavy painting times at work of late I guess.

Anyway, that's all for today.
More soonish hopefully.

Until then fuggers.

100. One Hundred Posts! #TBT to when it all started! It Came From the Underhive. Escher Gang part 5.

Throwing it all the way back!

The last time I updated the Escher Gang was back in June 2014!

But this Throwback is actually a tribute to how this blog first started.

My very first post back in September 2011 was about my Escher Gang, and the very reason this blog was created.
'It Came From The Underhive' was my very first solo blog project.

So I thought I'd rekindle this project and show it some of my now crazy productive hobby love!
And what better way than focusing on one of the very reaons I started this blog.... the epicenter of my Escher Gang.

The 'promiscuous princess.'

Back in my second ever post I knew she was going to be the leader of my gang, hence the title of the post (check it out here - http://theunderhivehero.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/urlhttpwww.html).
Sure enough my 3rd post was about her, and you can check her out in all her metal glory by following the link in that post...

But enough flashbacks.... let's get to that update... that sweet, sweet update!

She's come a long way from her bare metal days!
But here she is, the daughter of an imperial noble who ran away to the underhive, taking her father baroque plasma pistol with her to face the underhive alone.
Her connections to power, though diminished, all but guaranteeing her a fats route up the ranks of the local street gangs, and her pistol did the rest.
Now embroiled in the criminal activities of the Escher gang (still with no name after all these years) she leads the charge through the underhive.

A MODEL DONE!? I KNOW!?!

Another one down!

You should also check out my main blog; The science of selling yourself short.
I've been posting some  board game miniatures on there!
There is a massive update tomorrow too so keep your eye on that.

Anyway.
Nostalgia trip complete. Throwback threw.

I'll see you next time.

The Underhive Hero, out!

63. It Came From the Underhive. Escher Gang Part 4.

Welcome back to the Underhive you general scummy individuals! (And all the normal people, you're welcome too I guess)

More painting.

I'm doing little bits at a time.
Still can't fully get into the groove, so I'm painting in between playing games (mainly turns in civilization 5 and rounds in Chivalry: Medieval Warfare).

Moving on!

Terrible picture. Going for a very pale Caucasian look (think Ginger stereotype; Super pale and bright orange hair. That is essentially the plan).
Funnily enough she nicknamed 'The Slayer,' after the Dwarves haha.

Next up is Zoe

Yup. I did some more work on her. I'm basing her look on the fatigues the Zoe from Firefly wears during the war (you can catch her in it in the very first episode).
As the rebels we're called the 'Brown Coats,' I wanted it to be brown. Has to settle for a tan kind of colour for the base. I imagine it will darken with progressive shading.
The red Shoulder pad is a nod to her scarf and future outfits in the show.

I'm undecided on how I feel about it. I like that it is subtle, but I don't think it is striking enough.
Thoughts here would be appreciated!

Another skin tone for you guys...

Very red/brown. This is the base colour for 'Mongolian' according to the skin tone guide I linke din my previous post.
It builds from brown, through red and ends up pale flesh.

If it works, I'll be amazed.

The last picture for this post is this girl...

B!F!G!
I haven't actually painted the gang member that much, but I have finished the rusted up barrel she is hiding behind.
I used Tamiya clear Green to emulate some toxic goop leaking from the bullet holes, thought I think it could do with a couple of extra layers and maybe some highlights.

I though it might give the scene a bit more of a wasteland feel.
It is the Underhive after all.

That is all for this post

Thoughts so far?

60. It came from the Underhive. Escher gang part 2. A blast from the Underhive's past.

This post takes me back.

If you want to skip the history lesson, tough! I wrote it in bright pink! TRY AND MISS THAT!!
(oh? you can scroll past the pink bit...fuck...).

I originally created the Undehive Hero with a view to showcase my Escher Gang.
The Bolter and Chainsword (my then main posting format) was only a power armour friendly board, so it needed a new home, and I just can't seem to take to Dakka Dakka.

That is how The Underhive Hero got it's name; the undehive is where all the general scum and villainy of the 40k universe make their living. It seemed approriate to cross this the concept of the Underclass/working class Hero (I'm quite left wing).

Anyway in post, 2. The rebellion of a promiscuous princess, I introduced my Escher gang.
The were a proper rag tag bunch then; Poorly based, painted without any reference to work from...

Then the project got abandoned. That is, until my hobby rebirth.
I have talked about how my attitude towards hobbying changed, and it is with my Escher gang, and my Sisters of Battle where I started my hobby journey...again.
So about two years after my first post I started a new post series; 17. It came from the Underhive. Escher gang part 1. Retro reboot and refit.
The models were stripped, cleaned and re-based.

And then I left it there. I didn't see any point in painting them.
If there is a theme throughout my hobby life it is tragedy and apathy.
I got super stoaked doing these when I was with my ex.
After we ended that passion died a little.

Luckily. It kinda came back

So here they are.
Undecorated and ready to cause some fucking havoc, in a city near you (though some 39 millenniums in the future).

The concept, as it was all that time ago, is to have a collection of miniatures that breaks the 'Caucasian centric' view of the 40k universe.
We're talking about a universe that could have evolved in any direction.
It makes sense that Ethnicity would be extremely diverse (though admittedly completely different to the Ethnic diversities of our reality).

Anyway. I will be attempting to diversify my Escher gang.

In addition to this it will be a mix of the Guady/80's esq look that the traditional Escher gangs have, and that Slaaneshi cults also have.
For variety though, I thought I'd throw in some more subtle colours to represent the Gang members who are not so heavily influenced by their peers and/or side more with the 'Promiscuous Princess.'

Enough words.
I have started painting these models. So expect updates soon.

If you play Necromunda I'd love to hear from you, in fact, if you do any war gaming I'd love to hear from you.
Also if you have an comments, criticisms, suggestions, advice, or just general chatter, do that too.

You can comment on this blog post (or any other blog post relevant to the topic you want to talk about), or hit my up on twitter @DarkHaZZl3
If you're already a member of The Bolter and Chainsword, I'm perfectly happy for you to talk/leave feedback on my WiP post there; just keep if board relevant!
It can be found here - DarKHaZZl3's armies of the Imperium - a WiP

Thanks for reading guys and girls and xeno's scum.
Until next time

55. Urban: Dense population? Where are the buildings?! 40K Urban Terrain - Imperial building part 1.

HERETICS!
SET YOUR GAZE UPON THIS CREATION OF THE EMPERORS DIVINE MAJESTY AND WEEP!

Or in other words, I've been doing some more terrain stuff; this time an Imperial Building.

On my post of the WiP of the crashed land speeder I mentioned the tiles would be painted in a similar fashion to one of my other terrain WiP's; this is the WiP

med_gallery_33843_5272_963584.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_855217.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_443916.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_1295401.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_321949.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_547108.jpg

Yep, it is your bog standard Imperial building from some of GW's cities of death terrain.

The tiles were my first attempt at simple marble effect paintjob.

The tiles start off brown (I undecorated the building brown for some reason...),
Painted over in Dheneb stone,
Then a light dry brush of Dheneb and Skull white,
Finally I washed with Army Painter Soft Tone.

I repeated the process a few times until I was relatively happy with the stained effect.
I finished up with a coat of gloss varnished (which you can't see in the pictures).

The tiles look okay, but too simple for a realistic marble effect.
I'm going to leave these ones as they are. but in future I'll be trying to throw different colours into the mix to give it a more layer effect.
Also, I'll be making it more bright by adding layers of very light bone.

If that doesn't go well I'll try black marble...

That is all for now.
I might post another update later on/ or in the next few days, which will again, be something unrelated...

TOO MANY PROJECTS!!

In the meantime, feel free to comment, suggest things and leave feedback!
Especially if you have experience painting marble that you'd like to pass on to me.

Peace out!

-DH-

PS. I thought I'd give a shout out to some of the guys over at The Bolter and Chainsword for constantly supporting my hobbying, and giving me feedback and suggestions along the road.

The biggest shout goes to deathspectersgt7 and Jaspcat who have followed my progress pretty much constantly for the last couple of years, which is awesome!
They also float around the B&C making it a nicer place to lurk and post. Check out there stuff (click on their names)
I'd also like to thank all the other guys who pop up now and again. I really appreciate the input. Even those who just 'like' the content I put out; it is nice to know someone is reading.

50. Streets Awash With... Wash... Building a Gaming Board part 12.

Half a Century? Big E! wept.
Also 14th post of the year so far!
Commitment and progress? I think so!

Considering it has been so long since this project got updated I'll point you to my previous posts to refresh your memory...

Back? Did you check?
No?

Well...
.

First off is my tests scheme for the paving slabs (The set on the right).

Pretty simple.

- Undercoat black (Chaos black/ Any acyrlic paint),

- Paint dark grey (Any will do. I used Black acrylic and white crylic. But the GW base dark grey would be fine),

- Paint light grey (may require 2 coats; My mix was somewhere between codex and fortress grey/ Mianly white with a hint of black = Pavement grey),

- Wash with watered down black, making sure it goes into the crevices. The while still wet use some tissue paper to 'dab' off most of the paint.
This will leave the paint in the crevices and give the slab a darker tone, with a dappled effect on it.

- Drybrsuh light grey (Might have to do it twice; pavement grey),

- Very light Drybrush light-er grey (pavement grey with more white).

Done!

Better?

Well I did Stage 1, 2 and 3.

So.

Step 4.
Apply black wash.

The black wash is just Chaos Black watered done a lot.
Yes you could use a wash alternative...

But this is cheaper.

Apply this liberally to the slabs

Do not let it dry, but use a bit of scrunched up kitchen towel to dab it off.

One side done to show the difference in shade.

Continue until all your pavements are done.

And that's all the update I have on that.

It is a bit laborious/back breaking.
I suggest doing it while sitting at something almost chest height.
It is that or suffer

That will do for today.
I have more to share, but I'll save it for tomorrow!

As always, thanks for reading.
All feedback welcome and such.

Over and out.

42. A Road to Glory. Sisters of Battle Part 13.

Hahahahahhahahah....

Yes They are back! The nuns with guns have returned!!

I finally got round to painting a test model.
YES THAT IS RIGHT. A FINISHED TEST MODEL!

med_gallery_33843_5957_829523.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5957_424186.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5957_25905.jpg

The light washes most of the highlights out.
That being said, I want to bring the bone up 1 shade, and the purple on the tabbard could do with more layers and a brighter final highlight.

But for a proof of concept I'm relativity happy.

Ignore the base though... painting marble is another thing entirely.
Something that will require some practise and experimentation.

But yeah.
The Sisters! They Live!!!

-DH-

41.Random Update part 9. Killing Them With Kindness (and a Little Spite).

So yeah, I can't be arsed to paint lamppost right now.
Go figure!

In the meantime I'm painting all sorts of odds and ends... as you saw by my recent completed dwarf.
I guess this is just to keep my mind on painting, without drowning my enthusiasm with painting just one same process over and over.
That and ya'know, little pieces for my gaming board are not all that exciting.

Anyway, here is another little side project.

I posted this on the Bolter and Chainsword a few days back.
Unlike there, I feel I can go into more detail here.

Story time!

A considerable amount of time ago I had a group of friends.
We'd meet up regularly and game, drink and generally be merry.
One day it all just stopped. Me and another of my friends were frozen out.

Snap back to not too long ago. I start a new relationship with someone which opens my eyes to why all this happened.
And it is petty.
Vindictive.
And just a dick move all round.

Justifiably I was angry, but as time goes this anger has faded.
I got the vast majority of those good folk back in my life now.
But I am still a little bitter.

One day, my girlfriend mentions that the instigator of this cluster fuck asked her to paint some models.
To which I replied 'fuck that shit.'

But then I thought, you know what?
I'll paint them. And well too!

I'm kind of being the bigger man.... but not really.
At the end of the day these models will have been painted by me, and everyone will know that.
I think that will be more irritating than anything; receiving praise knowing it is all down to someone you tired to freeze out.

The models in question are Space Marines of the Ultramarines, second company.

So here is the progress so far;

med_gallery_33843_6479_303389.jpg

med_gallery_33843_6479_279973.jpg

I managed to get the 'prototype' miniature basically finished.

So yeah. A few touch ups, and nine more to go.

HA

39. Lights, Camera, Lamppost! Building a Gaming Board part 11.

Game Grumps sapped all my painting time last night.

I mean, I did do 'some'

painting...
 So here it is;

med_gallery_33843_5272_1875202.jpg

Just the light done basically.

Recipe is fairly simple.
Paint the area you want to be light a light grey (I used Astronomican, because I'm still living in the past),
Next paint most of the section you just painted in a 1:1 mix of that Grey and White,
Then paint another smaller square inside that square of almost pure white (judge for yourself on this one).

After than apply a glaze of Vallejo transparent yellow (It is the same yellow I used on my Space Marine a while back),
Once this is dry add a wash of Sepia (I used Gryphone/ however the hell you spell it).

med_gallery_33843_5272_362778.jpg

Once it dries you're done.

Since this picture I've blended the colours in together a bit more, gloss varnished it and added some 'glass' highlights.

The blended colours are made using Vomit brown and Golden Yellow (using Scorched Brown and White for darkening and lightening respectively).
Gloss varnish and add some 'reflection' type white highlights, and you're done.

You know what? Seeing as I'm feeling so goddamn generous, I'll take a quick picture
*Snap*

med_gallery_33843_5272_1595225.jpg

You can just make out the white lines... but the light kinda washes out the rust effect.
Either way, it looks good from a distance.

Just need to finish that cable and I'm done...
well, done with one of the 5 total.

Progress!

37. Random Update part 7. DIORAMAAAAA (which will now have its own post sequence).

I know I said it would get its own title... but there is a lot of work to do on this, so I probably should...

While I was in Grey mode I did some more paintwork on my diorama.

med_gallery_33843_5272_52269.jpg

med_gallery_33843_5272_36456.jpg

Thats all the base work done really. Need to detail it and acquire/build/paint the models.
Quite fond of it already, especially knowing whats going to be happening on it!.

Anyone out there who reads this got some objective markers/dioramas they'd like to share?
I'd love to see them!

Post them in the comments, or hit me up on Twitter (See the 'various areas of DH on the left sidebar).

Peace.
