72. Terrain = Grey. Brown. Repeat. 40k Urban Terrain. Crashed Aquila part 4.

Seriously.
Having themed terrain is awesome. Having a 6 x 4 Board is awesome.
Having them theme matched is extremely awesome.
Having to paint them to match is dull as fuck.

GREY?! BROWN?!
You know it.

So the day I updated this project last time round I thought I'd start doing the grey layers.

med_gallery_33843_5272_964511.jpg

Same(ish) recipe as always; Dark grey > Medium Grey > Light grey > Wash black > Final Brybrush.
(There are a couple of layers in between each stage but you get the idea)

Towards the end of last week (Friday?) |I started on the browns.
Same principle as with the grey, just with added dabbing and stippling on the ship itself to give it a weathered look;

med_gallery_33843_5272_64219.jpg

A closer picture

med_gallery_33843_5272_1077486.jpg

A close up of the metal

med_gallery_33843_5272_637261.jpg

The metal was easier than I'd anticipated.
The original layers were; Brown > Tin Bitz > Boltgun metal > Chainmail > Brown/Black wash

So to bring it back up after the basing layers got on it I gave it a heavy drybrush of Boltgun Metal.
Then I washed it with a 50/50 mix of Vallejo Smoke and Nulan Oil Wash, watered down a fair amount.
It gives it a very worn/oily brownish tint.
After that a quick drybrush of Boltgun and Chainmail and that's it.

Still some work to be done on this  ¬_¬
I've done some light weathering but I want a bit more; chipped paint, rents and tears maybe.
I want to work on the front piece a bit more; better smoke damaged glass, maybe a bit of blood splatter on the cockpit.

Also I'm toying with rust, and adding some brass details with verdigris. Thoughts?

70. MOAR layering. 40k Urban Terrian. Crashed Aquila part 3.

Hey guys. MOAR painting.

You can't tell from the pictures if I'm honest, but this has been several layers of black > grey and several layers of dark > lighter red. Both hit with a black and red wash respectively

Here is a closer picture that shows off the layers a bit better...

Wash leaves a little residue on large flat surfaces...so I'll be going back to 'scuff' it up a bit.

A fair bit left to do;
Base,
Metals,
Damage,
Details and embellishment.

That's all for this update. After the sheer amount of time I spent painting it so far I kinda hoped I'd have more to write.. but I really don't.
Painting large models is tedious...

Anyway
Peace out

68. Black and Red. Place Your Bets. 40k Urban Terrain - Crashed Aquila part 2.

Hey guys.

As I wait for my new alcohol based painting gear I thought I'd crack on with something else

Base coating this was very, very dull.
Mainly because it is so very big and flat.
But it was something to pass the time while I was pretending to be a phone on prop hunt.
Phone = Win.

Its getting there though!
Basing + Highlighting + Extensive detailing (of which will be a lengthy process)

New update will be up before the end of this week with any luck!

61. A Marble Finished Road to Glory. Sisters of Battle Part 16.

Woooo. Painting marble is so much fun!

Sarcasm does not work on the internet you say?
Well then...

Yeah. It sucks.

I decided to try my hand at painting marble for the basses my Sisters of Battle.

We start with two types of undercoat.
Black and white.

med_gallery_33843_5272_599412.jpg

Quick comment. Black doesn't work very well... moving on.
I honestly didn't know what I was doing here, except for using a lot of layers... so I googled.
Oh how I googled.

I viewed many a tutorial, and then I found this -
http://www.wampforum.com/VB4/content.php?r=2565-Orki-s-marble-tutorialIt seemed reasonable so I thought I'd give it a go

Using the colours in the guide (or close enough at any rate) I came up with this for the first step.

med_gallery_33843_5272_56727.jpg

I know. The picture isn't that helpful.
But seriously. There is no easy way to photograph that thing!!

I thought it looked like a good start. Nothing like the guide really, but still and reasonable beginning.

So then I moved on to the veins and glaze/washes...

med_gallery_33843_5272_354094.jpg

Looking back it isn't really that bad. I think using such a dark brown glaze was a mistake, and I should have used such a less vivd purple.
I think in future attempts I'll use something darker/ mix it with brown.

however, at the time I made the stupid attempt of carrying on instead of calling it a day....

med_gallery_33843_5272_745024.jpg

Totally ruined it.

So there you have it!
Hobbing isn't always bells whistles and happy days.
Sometimes painting ends in abject failure.
Though I have learned a thing or two.

Back to the drawing board with the marble then!

If you have experience in the art of painting marble effects then please, drop me a line.
Also, any other comments, suggestions, criticisms and all that jazz more than welcome.

You know the drill by now; Follow the blog, leave me a comment or hit me up @DarkHaZZl3 on Twitter.

44. ...OF DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM. 'It Came From Under the Mountain.' Dwarfs part 2.

Welcome back to Underhive Hero.
Though in regards to today's post, under the mountain would probably be more fitting.
(And yes this is part 2. The thane, my first Hall of honour post, was technically part 1).

DWARFS.
Yup, with a new army book and some new models due for release, I thought I'd dig out my dwarf army and finally get round to doing something with it.
It has been sitting in various boxes for about 5 years now in a half built state.
Time to amend that a little.
(This theme or restarting armies and not finishing anything is getting a little over done, yes? I know.
Tough).

After painting that random thane/lord, I decided to do something a bit more ambitious/ useful.

And what else do dwarfs have if not big ass  Anvil of Doom?

Still a work in progress. I'll post more when I get round to painting.

But for now, enjoy the pictures

36. Follow the Grey Slab Road. Building a Gaming Board part 9.

So... much....grey...

Dies.
Yup, I've been painting my board some.
It doesn't really look like I've done much (When in reality I've spent about 5-8 hours on it... I've lost count. I hate life).

So I thought Id share some bits and bobs with you.

First off is my tests cheme for the paveing slabs (The set on the right).

med_gallery_33843_5272_54146.jpg

Pretty simple.

- Undercoat black (Chaos black/ Any acyrlic paint),

- Paint dark grey (Any will do. I used Black acrylic and white crylic. But the GW base dark grey would be fine),

- Paint light grey (may require 2 coats; My mix was somewhere between codex and fortress grey/ Mianly white with a hint of black = Pavement grey),

- Wash with watered down black, making sure it goes into the crevices. The while still wet use some tissue paper to 'dab' off most of the paint.
This will leave the paint in the crevices and give the slab a darker tone, with a dappled effect on it.

- Drybrsuh light grey (Might have to do it twice; pavement grey),

- Very light Drybrush light-er grey (pavement grey with more white).

Done!

Yeah, it is not a masterpeice of paintwork, but I think it looks a'ight. Especially when they'll be a shed load of them.
Adds a bit of texture prior to any detailing that might get done.

I've already done the base grey on all the pavements;

Looks a bit shitty at the moment. But it does end up like the first picture, so I'm okay with it.
Glad they're out of the way.

Things left to do;
- Finish slabs (Wash black, Dab, Drybrush x 3),
- Finish road (Very light blue-grey drybrush),
- Paint details (Drains, man-holes),
- Paint lampposts,
- Clean up edges (Black boarder).

And that should do it.

SO GODDAMN CLOSE!!

27. Follow The Grey-Concreate-Slabbed Road. Building a Gaming Board part 6.

Sooo, about that update...

And as usual it will come in fits and starts. Expect an immediate update on my Sisters of Battle.

I managed to sort some board out. I've finished the pavement on the two straight road pieces.
I wrote up a little step by step if you want to steal/borrow/use the concept for your own stuff.

You will need;
  • PO210 00/H0 Self Adhesive Paving - found here: http://www.metcalfemodels.com/00-self-adhesive-paving - I suggest about 4 packs; two per road. They are well worth it to be honest as the can be used for basing too. I used them on my Necromunda gang
  • PVA glue - While the tiles are self adhesive, the adhesive quality is poor. Glue them down.
  • Tea Stirrers (See previous post about making the curb)
  • A LOT OF TIME!
Seriously. It takes about an four hours to do one board.

First off take a look at the slabs.

You'll be using the long slab, and the short slab. Put the squares and curves to one side.

Step two.

Using the lines you should already have on you board as a guide, put a row for long tiles out.
This should be about 5 long slabs.

Attach a curb piece (cut as before) as you go.

Step three

Unless you want a uniform running row of tiles, you need to mix it up a bit.
Using 4 long slabs, and two short slabs make another row.

Step Four
REPEAT!
Until you get halfway.

Step Five

Flip the board round and do the same on the other side.
This allows that half of the pavement to dry.

Step Six & Seven

Flip. Repeat.

DONE.

I love the way they look. Sure it takes a fair whack of time, but it is quite addictive and therapeutic.

A couple of tips;
  • Make sure to straighten each row as you go,
  • Have a cloth or sponge to soak up excess glue is necessary,
  • Save detailing (damage, weathering) until after it is dry,
  • Have a jewellers saw handy just in case you manage to go over.
This week I'll attempt to do some of the curved road piece in between bouts with the new Sisters list.
Harumph.

All feedback welcome.
Ciao

14. A Hate Campaign of Glory: Sisters of Battle part 5. WORST MODEL EVER.

Evening you heretical individuals.

I'm having a fairly terrible day to be honest, so I'm pretty much copy/paste from my B&C WiP
Anyway, on with the show.
In my fervent need to play some 40k, I set about writing up a some lists.
I've already posted my 1,500pts list, but I have also written a 400pts list (40k in 40 mins anyone?).

I'm not going to bore you with it, as you've already seen all the models in it.
Well...
All except one.

Now, I am honestly not one to bash GW. As far as things go I'm fairly pro workshop;
but...
OH MY GOD!!
I have never hated putting something together so much in all my god damn life!
I am glad I only have to build one of these (which is why it is still NOT finished. Arms to be added and legs attached to the torso :/).

I will be glad when this model is done. I don't even want to paint it. Blergh.

Whatevs
